Mind Your Own Business

Some people say a man is made out of mud
A poor man’s made out of muscle and blood
Muscle and blood, skin and bones…
A mind that’s weak and a back that’s strong

You load sixteen tons, and what do you get?
another day older and deeper in debt
St. Peter, don’t you call me, ’cause I can’t go
I owe my soul to the company store

Those are lyrics to an old Country & Western song done by Merle Travis. You can listen to the song here.

The song talks about the tough life of a coal miner way back then. It vividly depicts a feeling of being trapped, as such, “You load sixteen tons, and what do you get? Another day older and deeper in debt.” Life sure was tough back then, eh? What about today? Have things changed?

Kenyans are renown for their hard work and dedication. But we got to ask ourselves, who are we working for? If you pour your heart into your work and work extended hours and weekends, who stands to gain the most? In his book Rich Dad, Poor Dad, Robert T Kiyosaki gives this advice, “Mind your own business“. Simply put, this means: stop enriching your employer and start working for yourself!

Do you think, honestly, your boss cares about how much money you make? Does she sit and worry if you can afford to pay your child’s fees? Does she care? See, she is minding her own business and you are very important, because you make her wealthier. Maybe its time you started making yourself wealthier.

Why is SEO Important?

Search engine optimisation (SEO) may be the most important way to market your website/business online. This is because, currently, over 80% of all online traffic is achieved through the various search engines. A good ranking for a popular search term (keyword) can bring you thousands of visitors a day.

Today’s search engines operate a lot like the telephone directories of generations past, only on a much larger scale. Through just a simple search on Google, one is able to find thousands of businesses. The scale of it all means that it can be difficult for one to compete with all the competition. A business that relies on the internet to get customers, or hopes to do so, must think about how to ensure that they can be found easily through the various search engines. This is why SEO is that important.

The good news is that the overwhelming majority of Kenyan websites have largely ignored SEO completely. One wonders why…. This means that an opportunity exists for local online entrepreneurs to quickly outmatch all or most of their competitors. A small business in the offline world can suddenly become the leader in the online realm. I do not know how much longer most Kenyans will ignore SEO but as long as Kenyan web designers know only how to make beautiful sites (and not how to make them work and succeed), then even the simplest application of SEO principles will mean that everyone can compete with the ‘big boys’. Everyone can become a big boy, even if only online. Nice, eh?

In more developed countries where the internet is much bigger, SEO is damn expensive, and competitive – because everyone is doing it. But here, it is still relatively easy to rise up the search engine rankings. You do not even have to spend any money.

We recently reported that Like Chapaa had achieved some SEO success. This really boosted our visitor numbers. At that time we were ranking 5th for the search term, “make money in Kenya“. Now, we are ranked second, as you can see below. It is interesting to note that we have not actually spent any money on SEO – our rise has been totally ‘organic’.

Moving from 5th to 2nd has had an almost unbelievable impact on the number of visitors that we get to this website. You’d think that the effect would be linear but it not even close to linear – our visitor numbers have just shot up exponentially! This makes me think of something I once read concerning the law of accelerating returns as applied to SEO: if you rank number #1 for any search term, you get as much as approximately 10 times more visitors than the #2 rank, who gets as much as ten times more than what the #3 ranked site gets, and so on. Sounds crazy? I thought so too, many moons ago, but now I believe that this theory may, in fact, be reality.

What’s the lesson here? Don’t you dare ignore SEO. In fact, if you are looking to carry out any sort of online marketing campaign then you better think hard about making SEO the center and main focal point of your efforts. At the very least, it is cheaper than anything else and usually it has the highest and longest last yield.

What do you think? We love getting feedback. 🙂

Making Money With A Blog

There’s a lot of information out there about making money with a blog. And a lot of hype. For example, this article reports of blogs making $15,000 a month! Imagine that. There’s no doubt that you can make money from blogging. The blog your are reading does, in fact, make us money. 🙂 If you missed it, here’s a series of articles that we did on setting up a simple blog business.

However, I thought it is important to write something of a ‘reality check’ concerning making money with blogs, especially in Kenya.

So, you want to make money blogging? Welcome to the club! Thousands have gone before you and many have succeeded but the sad fact is that the overwhelming majority of bloggers make little money or, most likely, nothing at all. I’m not trying to discourage you, just telling you as it is 🙂

Many bloggers that I know of start off with the idea that they’ll make money from advertising. This is cool – thousands of blogs survive and thrive on this, especially with Google’s Adsense program. But, and it is a big but, the truth is that advertising may not be your best option. In fact, many of the blogs that fail were started with this general plan: Start a blog – write many cool and interesting and fun articles – get lots and lots of visitors over time – make money. This may very well fail in today’s internet. Why? Well, it is very difficult to make substantial amounts of money off advertising alone – especially with Google Adsense. Yes, Adsense is wonderful and it supports thousands and thousands of blogs to make money but it does not work unless you are getting large numbers of visitors to your site. If you don’t get at least a thousand visitors a day then Adsense will very much disappoint you. That’s the truth. So don’t base your whole plan on advertising alone.

The good news is that there is a world of options for blog owners. For example, Kenya Buzz (which is not a blog), managed to get some advertisers on their site even when their visitor numbers were pretty low. I’m not sure how much they charge but it’s got to be something worthwhile. If you can get such advertising deals for your young blog then go for it, by all means. This brings me to another important point, unless you have very high visitor numbers, ‘self service’ advertising works better than advertising platforms such as Google Adsense. By this, I mean that it would be better to try and find your own advertisers at your own rates than relying solely on programs such as Adsense. For one thing, you can make more money even if you don’t have the visitors – depends on how you structure your deal and market it.

Of course advertising is not the only way to make money using blogs. Problogger has a huge list of ways to make money using blogs. There are, indeed, many other ways. We have to keep in mind that, at its core, a blog is very much part of ‘social media’ and web 2.0. A blog is a tool that you can very easily use to build a community of like-minded people. This is why, when it comes to blog monetization, I favour the techniques that use blogs to build or enhance a business. What I mean is that you do not actually make money ‘from’ the blog, but because of it. For example, Wambere does make money with Like Chapaa but not from it – she uses it to get clients for her other business. It works very well. So, for instance, if you are a photographer, you definitely want to set up a blog but not so that you can make money off advertisements or other ‘direct’ means – the blog helps you build a community of readers; it further helps you engage those readers and nurtures their interest in you, and your work. Selling your photography services to them then becomes much easier – and every new reader is a potential client who will love your blog, engage with it and, finally, buy your services. A blog is perfect for this. Blogs work very well for businesses that have a long sales cycle – businesses in which buyers take time before deciding to buy from a particular person/business. I hope I’m clear. In my experience, this is the best way to make money using blogs in Kenya.

So, before you rush out to your blogs, here’s some more thoughts:

  • You just have to pick a niche. Do not write a general blog, it gets you nowhere and will not build a very good, single minded, community. For heaven’s sake do pick a topic that you really love. There are many months of cold nights ahead and if you don’t love what your blog is about, then it will start to feel like a “chore” and then your blog will die a slow, miserable and penniless death.
  • Think clearly and rationally about the content of your blog. Remember that your content and style of writing will attract a very specific type of person. You want to avoid attracting people who will not end up being your customers because then you’ll be wasting time with the blog, ama? For instance, if you are a freelance writer, it may be very natural to write a blog about “how to write well” or “how to make it as a freelancer”. You will be surprised at how many people do this. The question is, who are your readers going to be? If you are a writer, and your readers are other writers, do you think they will pay money for you to write for them? No? Then don’t do it! Write about something like photography, so that you attract photographers who may then, possibly, need your writing services.
  • Blogging is hard work and it takes a pretty long time before it starts paying off. It may take months to years, even if you write daily. There are millions of blogs out there and every potential reader of your blog already has tons and tons of other things to do with their time. Please only do this if you are prepared to go “long term.”
  • As you work on your blog, you will notice that as time passes, you become more successful. If you picked a good niche and write quality stuff, then you will succeed, after a while. Just keep at it and have a clear picture of what you want from the blog so that you keep yourself motivated. Thinking long term is better.
  • Blogging money can be the best money you ever make! Most bloggers just love writing (because they picked a topic that they enjoy) for their blogs and when this starts making them money, it is pure bliss!
  • If you already have a web presence for your business, or if you are already into ecommerce, then you just must have a blog. It is priceless in terms of marketing and enhancing your online presence. For one thing, a blog does wonders to any site’s SEO (search engine optimisation). You’ll want to think clearly and deeply about the ‘tone’ that your blog will take. Make sure it goes well with the rest of what you do. Creativity is key, though.

So, that’s it, some random thoughts on making money using blogs. What do you think? We’d love to hear from you. We’re also available for hire, by the way. 🙂

Hi Tech Porn

Some people say that for several decades now, the adult entertainment industry has driven the world’s mass adoption of some of the technologies that we now take for granted, the video cassette in the 1980s, satellite television in the 1990s, VCDs, DVDs and the present day Internet.

Is this really true? It may be – for example, hundreds of scientists have been looking to make a personal robot for decades and now we have a ‘sex robot’. Read more.

What do you think of a wolrd in which high tech is driven by porn?

Facebook: The Age of Privacy is Over

In an interview with Techcrunch’s Michael Arrington, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg spent a while talking about Facebook’s privacy policy. The gist of his talk was that the “age” of privacy is over. This is part of what he said:

“When I got started in my dorm room at Harvard, the question a lot of people asked was ‘why would I want to put any information on the Internet at all? Why would I want to have a website?’

“And then in the last 5 or 6 years, blogging has taken off in a huge way and all these different services that have people sharing all this information. People have really gotten comfortable not only sharing more information and different kinds, but more openly and with more people. That social norm is just something that has evolved over time.

“We view it as our role in the system to constantly be innovating and be updating what our system is to reflect what the current social norms are.

“A lot of companies would be trapped by the conventions and their legacies of what they’ve built, doing a privacy change – doing a privacy change for 350 million users is not the kind of thing that a lot of companies would do. But we viewed that as a really important thing, to always keep a beginner’s mind and what would we do if we were starting the company now and we decided that these would be the social norms now and we just went for it.”

I don’t know about you, but what he said sounds a lot like BS to me. The guys over at ReadWriteWeb share my view.

I came to Facebook from Myspace specifically because Facebook allowed me more control over my privacy. Now, Facebook has changed its privacy policy so much that I cannot make some things private. Why would they do this? I don’t buy the official explanation – methinks that Facebook are looking for two things: more money, and more control.

Biashara 30

Hello!

How is 2010 so far? Nice, eh? We feel that this should be the year in which you finally make it to where you have never been before. We would love it if you moved from success to success all through this year. As you well may know, Like Chapaa’s primary mission is to help as many people as we can achieve success, especially financially.

Therefore, we see it fit to announce that the 2nd edition of Biashara30 shall be starting early in the year, on February 2, 2010.

What is Biashara 30?
Well, Biashara 30 is a fun experiment, or project, in which a group of strangers come together to try and make it as online business people. If you have ever had thoughts of making money online, in whatever way, then B30 may be just what you need.

Currently, we have intentions on focusing this particular edition of B30 on the following:

  • Service businesses – where individuals or groups earn online by offering services (such as design, etc)
  • Product-based businesses – where you sell actual ‘stuff’

While the above are what we are thinking of, they are not necessarily what we shall be doing in this B30 – that is entirely up to the participants.

Who Should join?
Biashara 30 is not for everyone. It is only for those who have a burning desire to see themselves succeed in business; it is for those who can be online everyday; it is for those who are not afraid to try new things; it is for those who want to earn or learn to earn online.

Above all, B30, is for those people who much prefer learning by doing. B30 will not solve all your problems, it is not a silver bullet or a solution to anything. It is a community of people trying to learn together by actually trying to do something.

If that is you, then we invite you to apply. We’ll have lots of fun learning by doing. Oh, and it is free.
