Why I blog, and other stories from the Blogosphere

First off, if you’re still trying to figure out what blogging is, go here. This post was inspired by one of my readers, Erick.

Why should anyone in his/her right mind want to blog? There’s no simple answer to this. I suppose any answer to this question will fall into one of these broad reasons:

  • One blogs so as to share ones knowledge, thoughts and opinions.
  • One blogs to make money.

So why do I blog?
I suppose I could go on and on, playing with words trying to rationalize my addiction to blogging. As they tell all addicts, the first step is always to admit you are addicted. So the simple answer is that I blog because I am addicted. But why did I start? Why am I addicted? The answer is a bit selfish. I love to read and I read a lot, probably more than is normal. When I read, I get an obsessive compulsive (haha) urge to share my newfound knowledge and insights. The easiest way to do that, is to blog. I also secretly hope to make some money off blogging, but I acknowledge that I am not that experienced. In fact, that’s another reason why I blog : to gain experience on all things internet, so that I can come back in a few years, snap my fingers and earn millions online. ๐Ÿ˜‰ Above all, I love having people read what I write.

Okay, Why does the rest of the World Blog?
The Journal has this to say: Technology is allowing anyone with a computer, the ability to type, and an Internet connection to become a published authorโ€”of sorts. Web logs, or โ€œblogs,โ€ are the latest way that students, businesses, and many others are publishing their musings. Read more of this.

Webmasterview: Blogging’s something for anyone and everyone. I can’t think of anyone who can’t benefit from knowing more people, never forgetting a thought again and improving on their thoughts with little or no effort. Read more….

David Weinberger: As a writer, thanks to blogs I’m more intellectually stimulated than I’ve ever been in my life. I can’t get to sleep because I have ideas I want to respond to or that I want to instigate. I bolt out of bed in the morning to get in a little more time thinking out loud and thinking together. The water’s boiling with our ideas.

  1. Thanx for the citation! This is a duplicate comment from the previous post. You asked why I don’t blog.

Aco posted something on blogging some time ago. A lot of it is personal opinion (as he stated), and he has valid points. Others don’t agree with him and I see their point too. One statement that sticks out is:

    Quote
I think that part of the problem is that when many people start their blogs they don’t have an idea where their blog is going.
    End Quote

I would want to continue blogging even when no one comments, because I know what the goal of the blog is. Comments would be a nice bonus, not a necessity.

A guest blog would be an honor, even though I’m not sure what to write on ๐Ÿ™‚ .

  2. Hey, Erick. Thanks for the comment. If anyone deserves beer, its you. I’ve just read Aco’s post and loved it, especially the comments. Its good to gather so many points of view in one place.

I agree with Aco, too many blogs start with no clear vision – that’s happened to me before. When you first get into the blogosphere, you often just want a blog. You dont want to say anything specific. Once you mature a bit, you find your footing and start to blog in a certain way, on certain things. At least that’s how it happened to me.

Yeah comments should not be a necessity but the go a long way in motivating any blogger.

About your guest post, I was thinking maybe you’d share on why you’re not blogging yourself. But do not let me put you on the spot. Whenever you’re ready, just tell me what you want to say and we’ll do this.

  3. I’ve not had a Pilsner in a looongg time ๐Ÿ™‚ . Still waiting for my blog vision, though. The pieces are slowly coming together. I’ll send email to your yahoo addy whenever I put together something small.

  4. Thanks. I’ll be waiting patiently. Not! ( sorry, I felt an urge to do that). You take your time. Have a lovely evening.
