Do You Know These 5 Easy Ways of Making Online Friends?

Let’s face it, people weren’t meant to be alone. We all need friends. While some people can make five friends in five minutes, some people need much more time to make a friend. Regardless of where you fall, the internet provides a unique opportunity to make friends very easily – all you need are some typing skills. The following is meant for those who would like to have more online friends but don’t know where to start. Note: friend here could mean date. 🙂

1. Social Networking Sites
Making friends here is easy because that’s the whole point behind such sites. I recommend Hi5 over the highly rated myspace as, in my experience, Hi5 users are much more friendly and approachable. What you need to do:

  • Get an account at a social networking site and create a profile. Make the profile as detailed as possible. would recommend having someone who really knows you do it and then you come in and edit it later. Put up your picture.
  • Invite everyone in your email address book to be your friends. Next, visit your friends’ profiles and browse through their friends and contact some of them. Since you share a common friend, this should be relatively easy. Alternatively, ask your friends to introduce you to some of their other friends that you would like to get to know.
  • Join groups that interest you and use this as an excuse to get to know the groups’ other members.
  • Search for people with similar interests and contact them.

2. Online Dating Sites
Everyone who joins an online dating site is looking for new friends, or more. The only difference with social networking sites is that online dating sites are more ‘adult’ in nature and the people there are often looking for much more than friendship. OkCupid is the best around. What you need to do:

  • Your profile is very important as many people will make a personal judgment of you just by looking at it. Therefore, make your profile as best as you can. Again, having a friend doing the first draft is advisable.
  • Don’t just stop there but visit and use the dating site often. Many users only contact people who keep their profile updated.
  • Dating sites often send a periodic email of people who match your requirements or who would like to meet you. Exploit this feature and contact every person on such a list. You probably have a lot in common with them and may get along easy.
  • Browse or search for people with similar interests and contact them.

3. Chatrooms
These are probably the hardest places online to make lasting friends. This is because a typical chatroom has many people and so going one on one with someone is difficult and requires that the two of you get along quite well. However, if you can pull that off then you have an excellent shot at long term friendship. Don’t lose heart, though, as everyone in a chatroom is looking to talk to someone. Talkcity is my chat site of choice. What you need to do:

  • Set up a good profile, if possible.
  • Choose an intriguing and appropriate screen name. Avoid suggestive ones like ‘killerboy’ or ‘sex-fiend’. Using your first name is a good idea but a better one is to use a creative one such as ‘surfer213’ (this tells everyone that you love surfing and may attract others who share you interests) or ‘smellycat‘ (everyone wants to know why you use such a handle).
  • Do not sit back and wait. Talk to everyone, anyone. Try to get involved in the topic in the main room. Send a private message to anyone who asks, ‘anyone wanna talk to me?’ or ask that yourself.
  • Lastly, there’s absolutely no point in trying to be someone that you are not. Be yourself. This way, every friend that you get likes you for you. Also, keep your netiquette in mind.

4. Personals
These are sites, or sections of sites in which people place personal ads looking for friends and/or dates. Obviously, this is a great way to meet new people because, hey, they placed an ad didn’t they? I firmly recommend craigslist personals and, to some extent, e-pal world.

  • The easiest way to use these sites, obviously, is to respond to ads that have been placed by other people. If someone is looking for a person who sounds just like you then you have probably found a friend. However, placing an ad can also be beneficial in that you specifically ask for people with certain characteristics.
  • First impressions, again, are everything. Whether you’re responding to an ad or placing one, you want to impress whoever reads what you have to say so spend time working on your first words to a person.

5. Get Involved
This is the best way to develop long lasting friendships as the friendship is built up slowly and no pressure is put on it to work. By getting involved, I mean get to do something online together with other people. For example, join a forum or group and become an active member. This is bound to bring you in contact with other people and friendship is possible. Massively multiplayer games, like the impressive ogame, are a very good way to get something to do online, have fun, and meet other people.

  • Do not focus on making friends but on doing whatever it is that you’re supposed to.
  • Get into a team or group of people that you identify with. For example, this could be an alliance in an online game.
  • Be active.

How to Start A Conversation
Surefire topics to get the conversation up and running include:

  • Personal tastes – get them to talk about what they like
  • What do they do for fun? This should indicate whether you have anything in common.
  • Ask about their future plans, career goals, dreams, etc.
  • Talking about current events always works.
  • Ask about their family and friends.
  • Entertainment, music and movies.
  • What do they do with their holidays? Do they travel a lot?
  • Ask about their job or school.

AVOID: politics, religion, and ex boyfriends and girlfriends while you still don’t know each other too well.

General Tips & Guidelines

  1. Use both email and IM/skype to communicate with online friends, so as to present a more comprehensive front. Sometimes what you cant say over IM is easily said in a long email.
  2. Do not get too personal too fast. Generally, do not establish contact in real life for at least a few weeks. Get to know each other and determine if you will work our in real life. After some good sailing, actively strive for personal, real life, contact.
  3. Exchange pictures as early as possible and/or use webcams extensively so that everyone knows what to expect in the looks department.
  4. Do use snail mail at least once or twice. Nothing can be more personal or exciting as waiting for something in the mail.
  5. Always remember that you’re dealing with real people who have real feelings. Keep netiquette firmly in mind.
  6. Do not lie. Too many online friendships are based on nothing but lies(we even have fake webcams). If you’re looking for real friends then present the real you.
  7. Be careful as online friendship and dating sites have been known to be used to scam people. < a href="http://iexplor.blogspot.com/2007/04/avoiding-scams.html">Click here to learn how to avoid online scams.
  8. Be smart; don’t be stupid.

TrendHunter

Want to find out what the latest trends are in electronic gadgets, pop culture, business, or anything else? See something you think will become a trend? Trendhunter – tracking and reporting trends – always interesting and bizarre.

I really like this site, as you probably know, it will definitely keep you up to date on everything, including simply weird ‘trends’ like watching cheese mature. One of the things that I like most about it is that it features a lot of content but all of it is screened and therefore your are likely to find more relevant content than you would at Digg, for example.

However, I like it best because it actively recruits trend-hunters. Yes, anyone can submit a ‘trend’ which may then be listed at trendhunter. Not only is this good for the ego, but it also sends some traffic your way. Earlier this week, I submitted this post (Predicting the Next Billionaires) to trendhunter and it was approved – and is now listed in “this week’s hottest trends”. While the incoming traffic I got from trendhunter isn’t a lot, it is welcome all the same. As trendhunter gets more popular, I expect it to be able to drive much more traffic to its trend-hunters’ sites or blogs.
I think it’s only a matter of time before trendhunter becomes widely popular as it truly is a cool site. Become a trendhunter today, don’t miss out on yet another gravy train.

The people over at trendhunter should, however, work on their servers as www.trendhunter.com is currently unavailable. UPDATE: problem fixed.

MySpace and Barrack Obama: A Story of Intrigue and Drama

I bet that, by now, you’ve all heard about Barrack Obama’s recent incident on Myspace. If you haven’t, here’s the summary: Way before Barrack Obama declared his candidature for US president, someone else, Joe Anthony, created a myspace account to promote Barrack Obama at www.myspace.com/barrackobama. When Obama got into the race for the presidency, he naturally wanted a myspace account and his people contacted Joe Anthony and they started working together to optimize the profile – which grew to have 160,000 friends. Later, the two groups fell out of sorts and Barrack’s camp offered to buy rights to the profile. Joe Anthony asked for $39000. Obama’s team didn’t like that and asked myspace to hand over the account, claiming that they should have rights to Obama’s name. Myspace complied and handed over the account to Obama. This created quite a storm and bad press for Obama. Obama and Myspace are working hard to find a solution. As it stands now, Joe Anthony will get back his account (with all the 160,000) friends but under a different name. Click here to read the full story.

I find this incident quite funny and very unnecessary. In my humble opinion, Barrack should have paid the $39000 – I think that’s pocket change for a US presidential candidate. SMO Blog puts it best: “When your running for president, isn’t it worth the $39,000 to secure your MySpace profile without the flurry of bad press? Plus you risked alienating a talented and devoted new media savvy supporter along the way… $39,000 strikes me as cheap and probably more than that has been spent in crisis management already.”

Some lessons we should take to heart from this incident:

  • New media matters. Treat people online with as much respect as you would offline. Do not underestimate the value of the internet.
  • Secure your brand online NOW!! Yes that means going out there and getting your myspace and/or Hi5 profile, youtube account, url, and whatever else before a cyber squatter does.
  • You don’t really own anything you put up on sites like myspace, blogger, Hi5, tumblr etc.

Why Free is the New Pink

NOTICE: This post probably contains mathematical concepts. If math isn’t your cup of tea, you may wish to skip this and head over here instead.

Long ago in a galaxy far far away, there lived a teenage daughter. Her name was Mary and she was a cheerful, bubbly girl. She had a boyfriend, Jake. Mary loved to send text messages to Jake. One day, Mary’s phone was stolen on her way home from school. She rushed downtown to one of those shops where you can send text messages… she was attracted to a nice little shop. The place was elegant and very stylish but was completely empty. At the center, stood a sad, grey old man next to a sign that read, ‘we Charge you to send sms.’ As she prepared to send the sms, Mary’s attention was grabbed by the sound of a large crowd outside. “What could it be?” She asked herself. She took a look out the window and saw a large group of people streaming into another much less elegant, shop. A sign above its door read: ‘Send sms free and easy.’ Immediately, Mary swung her handbag into position and headed out towards the queue that was forming outside…

What Governs Competing on the Internet?

1. Metcalfe’s law – The value of a network increases as the square of the number of computers connected to it. Once you set up your website, the primary goal is to get as many people(users) to visit and use your website. The more users you have, the more valuable your site is. Hence you can make more money from it and more efficiently.

2. Moore’s Law – Simply put, computer processing power doubles every 18 months. 18 months is too long to wait for you to improve your site, service, or product so as to take advantage of the improving hardware. If you don’t do this, someone else will and suddenly you will become obsolete!

3. The amount of data (internet traffic) flying around the internet is increasing at an incredible speed. It used to double every year(pdf). Internet Statistics.

4. The cost of bandwidth is dropping almost as fast as the number of packets being sent across the internet is increasing. What is the real cost of bandwidth?
#3 and #4 imply that you should be able to expand your site to accommodate more users at minimal cost.

What Does all this Really Mean?

If you look closer at the above, you will notice a trend: Your primary goal is more users for your site; hardware improves therefore you strive to make your product better so that you can keep your site’s users; you can and should expand your site’s bandwidth to accommodate more users. It’s all about the user. The user is also your customer.

This is hardly surprising. We all know that the golden rule of any business is that your customer is your overlord; he pays your bills and your job is to make him happy.

As Paul graham says, In How to Start a Startup I advised startups never to let anyone fly under them, meaning never to let any other company offer a cheaper, easier solution…The ultimate way to be nice to users is to give them something for free that competitors charge for…The most successful sites are the ones that figure out new ways to give stuff away for free. Craigslist has largely destroyed the classified ad sites of the 90s, and OkCupid looks likely to do the same to the previous generation of dating sites.”

The nature of the internet is such that there will always be a competitor to your business. The challenge to you is to take advantage of the internet’s structure and use it to leverage against your competitor. Personally, I think many business owners are ignorant to the power of freebies.

This post is simply the product of an overactive mind. I’m no ‘suit’, of any type. Also, I wrote it as a response to criticism to one of my other posts: In Search of Free SMS. (Read the comments there to get the full story.)

Recommended Feed Readers

Feed Reader – Software that you have to download to use. This is its main advantage as you can access your feeds even when offline. It may cause problems if you use it on a slow computer. I currently use this one and recommend it for everyone.

Google Reader – A simple, powerful reader from google. It’s nothing fancy but it is simple to use and excellent for beginners. However, it may take a while to load at tmes.

PageFlakes – an impressive start page that gives you access to all your feed content, and more. I haven’t used this one for very long but so far I’m loving it.

Now that you know what RSS is, don’t you think it would be much easier to read Like Chapaa from a feed reader? Subscribe to my blog’s feed.

The Power of the Masses – The Digg Bomb

A friend of mine recently told me that web 2.0 is all about herd mentality, the power of the mob. I think he was right.

So today was a difficult day for us. We had to decide whether to remove stories containing a single code based on a cease and desist declaration. We had to make a call, and in our desire to avoid a scenario where Digg would be interrupted or shut down, we decided to comply and remove the stories with the code.

But now, after seeing hundreds of stories and reading thousands of comments, you’ve made it clear. You’d rather see Digg go down fighting than bow down to a bigger company. We hear you, and effective immediately we won’t delete stories or comments containing the code and will deal with whatever the consequences might be.” Digg Founder, Kevin Rose.

Kevin Rose was compelled to issue that statement after a massive Digg Bomb. In a nutshell, someone discovered a 16 digit number that is used to lock HD-DVD movies and prevent piracy. Digg administration decided to pull all stories containing that number because the body controlling the tecnology underlying HD-DVD anti-copying technology issued them with a legal threat. Digg users revolted at this and made sure that all the top ten stories on the Digg homepage contained the number. After this had gone on for while, Kevin Rose posted his post on the Digg blog. Kevin’s post also contained the number. That sure was brave because now Digg will probably be sued. That would be pointless because the number is very widely available.

This created quite a storm. Personally, I hate Digg users’ immaturity – this started quite well but turned out to be spam. Beyond spam, actually – we can all copy and paste! Here are some selected comments from here:

“OK, think about this, if digg get’s sued, the real life owners of the site will pay. You cowards posting the key, grow some balls and post your name and address with it. I BET you won’t. Why? Because you don’t want to get sued. I finally know how many 13 year olds are using digg.”

“You should All know that a number CANNOT be copyrighted nor possesed. That’s why they can’t sue us.”

“You got part of it right. They should take it down. But not because it’s against the law. Not because it’s copywrited (you can’t copywrite a number). That’s like me copywriting 28 and saying it’s my intellectual property. Many people are just having fun, but many of us believe that Digg handled the situation bad. They banned accounts, deleted stories, and then said they did it because of blah. If they just deleted the stories and said they were with us and just didn’t want to be the ones to fight the battle legally that’s one thing. Doom9 still has the original story from February where the hacker got the number through legal means… no hacking involved. By the way, I’m not sure how you can even believe it’s against the law. Yes, it might bring a frivolous lawsuit. That’s what DRM companies are for, but it isn’t copywrited etc.”

“This is how it’s against the law: DMCA – [ Digital Millennium Copyright Act ] Passed in 1998, the DMCA is a bill designed to bring copyright law up to date with digital media. Among other things,it outlaws the manufacture of, or “trafficking” in, technologies capable of circumventing “technical protection measures” used to restrict access to copyrighted works”

“My 2 cents. Enough with the new posts and topics about the HD-DVD key. I know it’s about socking it to the man and the freedom of information, but the HD-DVD bandwagon has left without you and is not turning around. I guarantee 95% of the people who posted the code lack the technical knowledge to actually make use of the sequence, let alone, create an application worth downloading. Just be patient and a solution for playing HD-DVD’s on Linux and non-compatible HDCP displays will be here shortly from the people who are capable of creating such software and more importantly extracting the key themselves. Bitches.”

“That is the whole point. We are not capable of doing anything with the number other than writing it down and putting it on t-shirts. Which is why it is so stupid that anyone would try to block it being posted. The people who can do something with it already have it and asking Digg to remove it isn’t going to help, which is why they shouldn’t, and now won’t.”

“So you think by placing Digg in a position where they could be sued is fair, as long as you have your freedom of speech? This is the internet, not a country.”

Online Document Processing

In Lakeview (New Orleans), a neighborhood devastated by the breach of the 17th St. Canal AFTER Hurricane Katrina, our grassroots recovery group is using Google Spreadsheets to track the progress of neighborhood recovery of over 7400 homes. Read Full Story.

My own cousin in Mississippi runs a small fishing fly business. His dad left it, the family business, to him. The only problem is that my cousin is only 17 years old and doesn’t have any family in Mississippi. Friends are cool but for some things, you can only trust family. So my other cousins and I help him out. We help him prepare letters, quotations and all manner of correspondence. Having studied a bit of accounting, I specifically hep out with the accounts. I’m not anywhere close to Mississippi so helping the guy out has been quite challenging. Dealing with email attachments generally pisses me off. see, I have a slow computer which can get (and is) crashed very easily. Downloading Yahoo! attachments seems to do that, every time. Besides, none of us is a trained writer so the letters have to be authored, edited, and re-edited by 3 to 4 guys half way round the world from each other. Something as simple as helping out my cousin and friend used to be pure hell and somewhat costly. Until we discovered Google Docs & Spreadsheets.

It’s no Ms Office as far as extensive word processing features go, but I love it all the same. Take the tour, you will too. Besides, do you ever even use half of Ms Word’s features? Google Docs and Spreadsheet is the future: Do your work online, store it online and have it accessible from anywhere in the world. The coolest thing, however, is the ability to invite people to collaborate in your work. For my cousin, I write the first draft, then my other cousin in England looks at it and improves on it (if he can, hehe) then finally the guy in Mississippi applies the finishing touches. Neat, huh?

There’s nothing to download; you access your documents and spreadsheets from any computer with an Internet connection and a standard browser. And it’s free.

Some people say that Google Docs and Spreadsheet is too basic and not ‘feature rich’. I think such people are probably trying to compare it to Ms Office. No, it’s not Ms Office! Don’t compare. Just because it different doesn’t mean it’s not good. Personally, I like it that they didn’t set out to copy MS Word and Excel (I am definitely ABM ). Obviously, Google Docs does require a little getting used to but all in all, it’s wonderfully simple, beautifully crafted, and quite a lifesaver.

If you want an online office suite with a little more firepower, try thinkfree. It’s basically an Ms Office clone, but online.

By the way, this post was written using Google Docs. I also published it without signing into Blogger. 🙂 I did have to insert the label later, though.
